Tools of the Craft

These are only a few of the tools used in the Craft. It is by no stretch of the imagination all of the tools, but only some of the most common.

None of these tools are used to harm another. This violates one of our most basic laws-"An it harm none, do what thou will."

Athame
This is a ritualistic knife, usually double edged, that is used to direct personal power during works of magick or religious ceremonies. It is almost never used for actual physical cutting.

Bell
This tool is used to create natural vibrations that bring harmony into a ceremony or spell. It is used to mark certain points in ceremonies and to drive away negativity. It is sacred to the Goddess, but has no association with a specific Element.

Boline or White-Handled Knife
A knife used for the cutting of herbs, carving of candles and wood, and other such menial tasks not performed by the Athame. It is usually white-handled, but does not have to be, and usually has only one sharp edge.

Book of Shadows
This is a workbook which contains spells, rituals, recipes, rules, and so forth (Mine even has a few phone numbers of other witches in it!). It can be a private, personal book, or a book shared by a coven. But either way it is very powerful and should be guarded carefully.

Broom
The broom is a tool used to cleanse an area by magickally "sweeping" it free of negative energies. The bristles need not even physically touch the floor to do its job. It is a protective tool that can be used to protect the home simply by placing it across your threshold or windowsill. It is sacred to both the God and the Goddess because of its unique phallic and feminine shape.

Cauldron
This tool is a wondrous tool of transformation. Within it fires burn and water boils. It can be used for scrying, storing, burning...almost any ritualistic, or even common use. It is a must have for any Witch. It is sacred to the Goddess because of its womb-like shape.

Censer
This tool is an incense burner. Within it, or upon it, are burned various types of incense. It is also a very important part of any Witch's tools.

Chalice
It is simply a cauldron on a stem. It is a symbol of both the Goddess and fertility. It is used in ceremony to hold wine, ale, water, fruit juice, or whatever pleases you.

Pentacle
This tool is a flat piece of metal, glass, wood, wax, or clay inscribed with the shape of the pentagram. It is often used on the altar as a place to lay other, smaller tools to gather energy and be protected. It is a tool of protection for both the altar and the home. It is sacred to the God and Goddess.

Wand
This item is another tool used to direct personal power. It is the oldest known religious tool of mankind, and is still commonly used today. It is usually made of wood and can be carved with symbols or even adorned with gemstones. It is sacred to the God.
